A next-generation mass-timber residence, conceived as Africa’s first Active House.

A Holistic Approach to Architecture

Hout Bay House is a unique residential project in Africa, with no realised or in-progress equivalent on the continent. It is not a conventional high-end home, but the first Active House in Africa, developed using advanced European construction systems that combine mass timber structure with high-performance thermal design and a ventilated façade. The project is defined by precision, performance, and long-term architectural intent rather than surface expression.

The design is developed as a fully integrated system, where architecture, energy performance, and digital workflows are resolved together from the outset. Design intent is carried directly from concept through engineering to execution, ensuring the built outcome reflects what was designed, without compromise or interpretation.

A digitally coordinated, fabrication-led approach allows the building to be produced with industrial accuracy. Components are translated directly from model to manufacture, enabling efficient construction, a lightweight structure adapted to the natural topography, and reduced on-site impact.

Living performance is fundamental to the project. The house is designed to achieve an energy surplus while maintaining stable thermal comfort, clean indoor air, and low operational energy through an optimised envelope, integrated mechanical systems, and careful solar response.

Much of the project’s value lies beneath the surface, in the systems that define durability, comfort, and long-term performance. These elements are integral to the architectural concept, resulting in a composed, restrained architecture shaped by engineering intelligence rather than applied aesthetics.

Timber, soft greens, and sunlit textures set the tone of the home, creating a gentle rhythm as you move from one space to another. The CLT structure introduces a quiet warmth, while curated materials echo the surrounding mountain slopes and vibrant Cape flora. The result is an interior that feels restorative and grounded — a calm retreat shaped by colour, light, and natural materials.
